Whether it is said aloud or it is self talk,
the manner in which we say things shapes our actions - which shape our lives.
In the gym, and in life, weak language is one of the main reasons we don't achieve what we set out to do. Weak language causes doubt which inevitably leads to us not reaching our maximum potential.
So how do we fix this?
Over the next 2 weeks, I'll address the 3 most important elements of this change.
Part 1: Removing Weak Language
Examples of weak language:
"I'm gonna try to do my best to incorporate these diet changes"
"I think I'm going to make the morning class"
"I might grocery shop tonight"
There is no such thing as "trying to do your best". You either do your best, or you don't. Leaving that "TRY, "THINK and MIGHT" in front of the action gives you an out and an excuse to not execute - thus repeating the cycle of unhealthy habits and a mental state of being unhappy.
Mindset Change - Immersion. The people who immerse themselves in the process are the ones who win. Think about the best way to get into a cold swimming pool - you can't dip your toes in.... then go in up to your waist... then your chest... it just creates more pain. The best way to to fully immerse yourself in that cold water. THAT is where adaptation happens. When you immerse yourself in a fitness program you immediately gain valuable feedback.
Verbiage Change. Even when speaking to yourself, remove weak words such as "try, might and I think". Commit fully to the process OR be self aware enough to know that this process is not for you and try another one. Don't get stuck in that purgatory between committing and not committing - it is painful in the present and in the future when you look back and think of all of the time you wasted.
